How To Block Wifi and Mobile Phone Signals With Wallpaper
Home Network security seems to be a simple thing these days. It is not difficult to set your router with the proper security measures to stop others from hopping on your WiFi signal and getting that internet service you are likely over paying for.
A NEW wallpaper that can filter out Wifi and certain other frequencies has been developed by French researchers: and they say it could be priced the same as classic wallpaper.
Of course this magical block that keeps out WiFi pirates really comes down to a password. It's a tiny bit more complicated than that, but for the most part this is all it takes to make your home network private instead of branding it a hotspot and sharing it like the town bicycle.
But of course there are ways around these security measures, and if you want to keep signal thieves out of your network, here's a product that will likely stop them dead in their tracks.
With all the logic of a giant wall of stones, this solution has a coating of silver ink that can be embedded into wallpaper to block out certain electromagnetic frequencies while only allowing certain "important" signals to pass through.
Pierre Lemaitre-Auger of the Grenoble Institut Polytechnique said the wallpaper - called Métapapier or Metapaper - would give people and businesses reassurance about electromagnetic radiation from Wifi and mobile phone signals.
It Has a Treble Purpose:
(1). Shielding people from outside radiation,
(2). Ensuring homes and offices' own Wifi signal is not being hacked or hijacked
(3). Enhance the look of your home or office, etc.
Developed by Grenoble INP Phd student Fabien De Barros and the Centre Technique du Papier, it uses a printed pattern of conductive silver ink that filters out specific frequencies such as the 0.9, 1.8 and 2.1 GHz of mobile phone signals or the 2.45 and 5.5 GHz of Wifi.
However, the filters allow other waves such as FM radio or TV to pass through.
The researchers said it could also help improve sound-proofing and would be used either as backing paper or as wallpaper but could also be used as part of floor-coverings or plasterboard.
France uses about 60 million rolls of wallpaper a year and the Centre Technique du Papier estimated it could become a €30 million market for France alone.
Métapapier will be marketed by Finnish company Ahlstrom, which has bought the rights. It should be on the market next year. A similar product was developed by researchers at BAE systems in 2004, but not brought to market.
Although it's likely to be most useful in places where ringing mobiles and other electromagnetic disturbance is a genuine problem (such as theatres, concert halls and hospitals), Metapaper is also set to be made available for private purchase.
As well as blocking signals coming in, it also blocks your own signals from going out – so you could also look at this as adding an extra level of security, since your wi-fi network could potentially be limited to just your own home.
Using special patterns of silver crystals, the wallpaper forms a wall that can actually block signal intrusion — from either side — unlike your regular walls. I know silver crystals sound expensive, but by all reports, the wallpaper won't be that much more expensive than your normal wallpaper, and if the design irks you a little bit, don't worry; you can obscure it with paint. After all, what's the worst that could happen? You accidentally double-block Wi-Fi and cell phone signals?
