Hemp (TRILLION DOLLAR CROP ) Wins In Federal Farm Bill

Hemp Wins In Federal Farm Bill

Universities and researchers can expect to cultivate more of pot’s sober cousin, hemp, thanks to a section in the Farm Bill which passed the Senate today.

Humans have used the tall, cane-like fibrous weed for eons as a food, fuel and fiber, yet the federal government banned hemp as part of their war on marijuana beginning in 1937. Hemp supporters never forgot the plant, which cannot be legally grown in the U.S., but can be imported from places like China and Canada. Retail sales of hemp in the U.S. total about a half-billion dollars per year.

The end of pot prohibition in certain parts of the country also heralds the return of hemp, which is now legal at the state level in nine states. Under a provision in the massive, $100 billion Farm Bill, universities and researchers in those nine states could more easily obtain permits to grow hemp for research purposes.

“We are laying the groundwork for a new commodity market for Kentucky farmers,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), said in a statement reported by the Wall St. Journal.

Bruce Perlowin, CEO of Hemp, Inc. said in a release, “… these are monumental steps for the industry. What we are all trying to get people to understand is that this will finally unlock a clean ‘American Industrial Revolution’ that will not only be economically sound, but environmentally advantageous.”

Lobbyists for narcotics officers remain opposed to legal hemp. They say police cannot distinguish between the non-psychoactive fiber crop (which contains less than .3 percent THC), and drug crops, (which have THC levels 50 times higher than that).

This surprising blog explains the environmental interest in the non-drug variety of hemp as a versatile industrial fiber, and documents the history of its prohibition.

Backed by years of worldwide research, TRILLION DOLLAR CROP exposes the political and industrial manipulations, which outlawed one of the most valued plants in history.

Legal Cultivation of Hemp—a cousin of marijuana used to make everything from fabrics to pharmaceuticals—is closer to becoming reality as a result of a provision tucked into the farm bill that passed both the House and senate.

Federal law effectively prohibits the cultivation of hemp, making no distinction between that plant and marijuana, which is much more potent. However, nine states have passed laws legalizing industrial hemp farming, including California, Kentucky and Vermont, according to Vote Hemp, a not-for-profit advocacy group.

If the legislation becomes law, universities and agriculture departments in those states would be able to grow it for research purposes, with the hope that commercial production could be on the horizon. Permits to grow hemp for research purposes are technically available now, though they are extremely difficult to get.

"We are laying the groundwork for a new commodity market for Kentucky farmers," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), who helped craft the language in the farm bill, said in a statement. Farmers there have struggled to find a replacement for tobacco, which is being grown less.

Proponents hailed the House vote as an important step toward legalizing commercial farming of hemp, which like marijuana is effectively barred under the 1970 Controlled Substances Act. In marijuana, the concentration of the psychoactive chemical tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is 10% on average, and sometimes much more. Industrial hemp, on the other hand, can't have more than 0.3% THC under the farm-bill provision.

Separate bills with bipartisan support in the House and Senate exclude industrial hemp from the 1970 law and allow states to regulate its cultivation.

Supporters say full legalization could create a vibrant new industry. Despite curbs on hemp cultivation, hemp-based products such as carpeting and cosmetics can be imported legally, from countries including Canada, the U.K. and China. Retail sales of such goods reached nearly $500 million in 2012, according to the Hemp Industries Association.

But to build up a U.S. industry would require research, said Eric Steenstra, president of Vote Hemp. Though farmers cultivated it legally for much of U.S. history—before it was effectively banned under the 1970 law—production petered out in the late 1950s. That means today's farmers must start from scratch to figure out which varieties grow best in different climates, and when to plant and harvest the crop, Mr. Steenstra said.

Not everyone is thrilled at the prospect of hemp farms popping up. Some law-enforcement groups say the crop looks similar to marijuana and could interfere with drug-interdiction efforts.

Still, some states appear poised to act. Oregon, which passed a law permitting hemp cultivation in 2009, is already working on setting up rules to regulate production, said Bruce Pokarney, director of communications at the state Department of Agriculture.

In Kentucky, which passed a similar measure last year, Agriculture Commissioner James Comer has made hemp a signature issue. He said, the state plans to license farmers to grow hemp this year. He said he also has been in talks with companies that could process hemp seeds and fiber.

One business group he said he is meeting with this week is interested in using hemp hurd, a material in the center of the stalk, to make bedding for animals ranging from birds to livestock. That could be a big seller in the state's large equine industry, he said.

"It will take several years to develop," Mr. Comer said. But "hopefully, Kentucky is positioned to be the leader in this emerging industry."

Hemp once provided the paper on which US banknotes were printed, the cloth for the original Levi jeans, as well as the sails and rigging of ships. During World War II it was of such strategic importance that the US Government encouraged farmers to convert to hemp cultivation.

TRILLION DOLLAR CROP shows how the recently developed, non-drug variety of hemp is being researched and cultivated internationally because of the plant's versatile qualities and environmental friendliness. This program takes the audience on a world tour from Australia to the United Kingdom, and from The Netherlands to France and the US. It illustrates how hemp is being cultivated as an industrial fiber for use as an alternative to wood for paper production, to cotton for clothes, and to plywood for construction. We all benefit, especially our forests and topsoil.

Nutritional Benefits of Hemp

ng_hempseed

One serving of hemp powder contains 11 grams of protein just about as much as two hardboiled eggs. Hemp is also hypoallergenic easily digestible and the plant itself is environmentally friendly as it sustains without much water.

Hemp is a high protein seed containing all nine of the essential amino acids (like flax). It also has high amounts of fatty acids and fiber as well as containing vitamin E and trace minerals. It has a balanced ratio of omega 3 to 6 fats at around a three to one ratio. This won’t help correct your omega balance if it’s off, but it gives you the right balance to start with.

Further the protein content of the hemp seed is very digestible. Many people noted their personal experience of finding that hemp seed protein did not cause bloating or gas, like some of their whey, or other protein shakes did.

Also, unlike soy which has super high amounts of phytic acid (that anti-nutrient that prevents us from absorbing minerals), hemp seed doesn’t contain phytic acid. At the very least, this makes hemp seed a step up from soy.

It contains a list of benefits including what I mentioned above plus including some others as well.

Hemp Contains:

* All 20 Amino Acids, Including The 9 Essential Amino Acids (Eaas) Our Bodies Cannot Produce.

* A High Protein Percentage Of The Simple Proteins That Strengthen Immunity And Fend Off Toxins.

* Eating Hemp Seeds In Any Form Could Aid, If Not Heal, People Suffering From Immune Deficiency Diseases. This Conclusion Is Supported By The Fact That Hemp Seed Has Been Used To Treat Nutritional Deficiencies Brought On By Tuberculosis, A Severe Nutrition Blocking Disease That Causes The Body To Waste Away.

* Nature’s Highest Botanical Source Of Essential Fatty Acid, With More Essential Fatty Acid Than Flax Or Any Other Nut Or Seed Oil.

* A Perfect 3:1 Ratio Of Omega-6 Linoleic Acid And Omega-3 Linolenic Acid – For Cardiovascular Health And General Strengthening Of The Immune System.

* A Superior Vegetarian Source Of Protein Considered Easily Digestible.

* A Rich Source Of Phytonutrients, The Disease-Protective Element Of Plants With Benefits Protecting Your Immunity, Bloodstream, Tissues, Cells, Skin, Organs And Mitochondria.

* The Richest Known Source Of Polyunsaturated Essential Fatty Acids

The best way to insure the body has enough amino acid material to make the globulins is to eat foods high in globulin proteins. Since hemp seed protein is 65% globulin edistin, and also includes quantities of albumin, its protein is readily available in a form quite similar to that found in blood plasma. Eating hemp seeds gives the body all the essential amino acids required to maintain health, and provides the necessary kinds and amounts of amino acids the body needs to make human serum albumin and serum globulins like the immune enhancing gamma globulins.

Can It Make You High?

In short, no. To grow marijuna you have to have special seed that grows a plant high in THC, the property responsible for the drug response. Commercial hemp seed contains very low amounts, plus they contain a substance that counteracts THC. Dr. David West says:

Reality: Hemp oil is an increasingly popular product, used for an expanding variety of purposes. The washed hemp seed contains no THC at all. The tiny amounts of THC contained in industrial hemp are in the glands of the plant itself. Sometimes, in the manufacturing process, some THC- and CBD-containing resin sticks to the seed, resulting in traces of THC in the oil that is produced. The concentration of these cannabinoids in the oil is infinitesimal. No one can get high from using hemp oil.

“Q: What Is The Difference Between Hemp And Marijuana?

A. Marijuana and hemp both come from the same species of plant, Cannabis sativa L., but from different varieties. There are different varieties of Cannabis, just as Chihuahuas and St. Bernards are different breeds of dogs, Canis familiari.

Marijuana is the flowering tops and leaves of psychoactive varieties of Cannabis that are grown for their high THC content.

Hemp, also referred to as industrial hemp, are low-THC varieties of Cannabis that are grown for their seeds and fiber. Hemp is grown legally in just about every industrialized country except the USA”

Was It Historically Used As A food?

One thing is clear. Hemp has been grown for a long time. It may even be one of the first crops. Hemp was used for making paper, clothes, and ropes and oil for lamps. But was it produced for food, or was it simply eaten in times of famine?

It looks like it was definitely used as a medicine for a variety of uses. The Chinese especially utilized hemp seed for medicine.

This quote gives a good overview of some of the information I found about the historical uses of hemp as food.

“The use of hemp for food and medicine may be as old as the human race itself. Recent interest in the seed arises from the awareness of the nutritional need for omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids, as well as the need for cheap sources of protein to feed a burgeoning population in Asia and the developing world. In addition to its nutritional value, hemp seed has demonstrated positive health benefits, including the lowering of cholesterol and high blood pressure.

In the second century, Galen recorded that some people enjoyed eating fried hemp seeds with their desserts. As recently as the 1950′s in Southern Africa, mothers of the Sotho tribe served the ground seed “with bread or mealie-pap” to children during weaning. Human uses of hemp seed for food are naturally found in India where the oil is pressed to provide a table oil, and in Russia where the oil is made into a kind of hemp butter or margarine.

In Europe, it was once required of monks that three meals made of hemp seed were eaten daily, whether in soups, gruel, or porridges. In the belief that the spirits of dead relatives visit every Christmas Eve, the Polish and Lithuanian people prepared them a soup of hemp seed which was called “semieniatka”. The Ukrainian and Latvian people made a similar offering on the day of Three Kings. In China, hemp seed was consumed by farmers in the north and the seed were listed as a famine food for the starving multitudes of China near the end of World War II. Australians also used the seed during two famines in the nineteenth century.

Today’s hemp seed products are being developed on the working premise of that which can be done with flax seed and soy beans might also be applied to hemp seed. Very basic food preparation, and the processing techniques have been the start of such seemingly remarkable foods as a hemp seed tofu and a low fat cheese substitute that even melts and stretches like real cheese.”

Hemp seeds are a nutty food source considered by leading researchers to be one of the most nutritious superfoods on the planet...but US farmers are not allowed to grow them.

So What Is All The Buzz About Hemp Seeds And Hemp Seed Oil?

What is Hemp, Really?

Hemp seeds come from the plant Cannibus sativa L. Sound kind of familiar? In fact, the hemp plant is often confused with the marijuana plant because they are of the same family (Cannibus) and closely resemble one another.

Because Of This, Hemp Has Had A Checkered Past And The Debate Continues Even Today.

The hemp "seed" is actually an achene: a simple dry fruit with a hard shell, just like sunflower seeds. It is considered one of the most versatile and economical plants, with many uses from food to biofuel.

Here Are Just Some of Hemp's Many Uses:

Food - Hemp seeds can be turned into hemp seed oil, butter, hemp milk and even flour. The list of food applications is endless. Over the years, hemp seeds have been part of the food supply in many cultures around the world. In parts of Asia, roasted hemp seeds are eaten as a snack, like popcorn (tasting similar to pine nuts).
Historically, the most famous hemp seed consumer was Buddha himself, who ate them during his fast of enlightenment.

Fiber - Hemp is used to make a variety of materials from the coveted natural fibers of hemp fabricto rope, paper and building materials.
In fact, hemp was the fabric used in the original Levis jeans, but the fabric had to be abandoned by Levis due to lack of supply.

Fuel - Hemp is considered one of the most efficient plants for biofuel as an alternative to gasoline. Woody Harrelson recently drew attention to the myriad of uses for industrial hemp by touring the West coast with a diesel bus run on hemp biofuel.

Hemp seed oil has been attributed to helping: increase energy, soften skin, relieve arthritis and normalize blood cholesterol.

So Why Does Hemp Carry A Stigma?

The Stigma of Hemp

It's all about the Cannibus species...the controversy is over how much THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient responsible for the "high" from smoking marijuana) is in hemp.

According to the hemp growers industry, industrial hemp grown for food, fuel and natural fibers contains virtually no THC (less than .3%).

In fact, when hemp is processed into hemp seed oil and hemp seed milk, for example, it further reduces the minute amount of THC in hemp.

And yet, there's still a stigma due to the long-standing idea that hemp and marijuana are one in the same. Hemp is actually categorized with marijuana as part of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 and is therefore illegal to grow in the US.

A few years ago, because of issues with drug testing, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) actually tried to pass a law banning the sale of hemp products (that were ingested or applied) in the US. This caused health food stores, like Whole Foods, to pull hemp products off the shelves. After additional research from Canada, it was found that drug tests did not confuse hemp and marijuana, nor did hemp products create the "high" associated with marijuana.

Therefore, hemp products made their way back onto the shelves in health food stores, with demand ever increasing.
So where do we get our hemp?

Imports...industrial hemp is legal to grow in just about every industrialized country, so the US relies on imported hemp seeds from countries like Canada.

Whether you choose to consume hemp products or not, one thing's for sure: there's nothing that creates a better "high" than optimal health.
