Intuit Labs (The Makers of Quicken And Quickbooks) Integrates Bitcoin Payments Service For Merchants

Intuit Labs (The Makers of Quicken And Quickbooks) Integrates Bitcoin Payments Service For Merchants

Updated 6-26-14
Intuit Lets Merchants Accept Bitcoin With New ‘PayByCoin’ Service

California-based financial management solution specialist Intuit is now enabling its merchant network to accept bitcoin through its new PayByCoin service.

PayByCoin integrates Intuit’s QuickBooks Online payment processing service with bitcoin wallet and merchant processing provider Coinbase.

Earlier this year, the business software developer began testing a bitcoin payments service geared toward small businesses. At the time, Intuit said that it was seeking to develop a low-cost, low-risk digital currency acceptance service for its merchants.

This service is now being offered free to Intuit customers that use QuickBooks online to create electronic invoices for customers. Merchants can opt to receive payments in either BTC or USD, and the company will charge no additional fees on top of the 1% transaction cost imposed by Coinbase.

The company stated that it won’t be involved in the transaction process, but will rather serve as an interface that its customers will use to facilitate payments.

Intuit explained:

“Intuit is providing the connectivity and software services to direct customers to the small business operators CoinBase wallet, and to record the transactions in QuickBooks Online. Intuit will not receive or hold any funds related to the PayByCoin transactions, either in USD or bitcoins.”

According to Intuit, PayByCoin is intended to broaden the variety of revenue sources for its merchant network, saying on its website:

“Intuit is always looking to help our QuickBooks Online customers grow their business and get paid in any way they choose.”

Notably, Intuit is also the owner of personal financial planning platform Mint, which added Coinbase support earlier this year.

Accounting software developer Intuit has announced that it is testing a bitcoin payments service aimed at small businesses.

The company describes QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments as a service that enables small businesses to take bitcoin payments without having to bother with bitcoin wallets or even deal with bitcoin at all. The service is being developed by Intuit Labs, the experimental branch of Intuit Inc.

As of 2009, QuickBooks holds approximately 89% of the small business accounting software market.  In that same year, Intuit itself had $3.18 billion USD in revenue.  TurboTax, another one of Intuit’s software successes, owns 39% of the retail tax preparation software market.  Intuit also receives a large portion of its revenue from Quicken, which is a personal finance tool.  TurboTax’s blog released a post to help users account for Bitcoin in their tax returns.  This blog post was made on 3/26/14 and helped many people decide how to (or not to) report their taxes on Bitcoin.

For years, Intuit has spent a large portion of its energy towards innovation.  Intuit Labs, understandably, runs “Lab Experiments” to test and implement the newest innovations and technologies, package them into user-friendly software, and deploy them to small businesses around the world. The newest of these projects, just announced today, is QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments.

Behind The Innovation

Small businesses just want to get paid. Cash is troublesome to keep track of, checks have lots of friction (writing, mailing, depositing) and card transactions have high fees.

Our team is constantly looking for ways to improve the lives of our customers. During incubation week, we experimented with bitcoin to solve the aforementioned pains associated with getting paid.

We're still testing our bitcoin service. Stay tuned for more details! Sign up for the beta waiting list here.

It is a familiar concept, already used by existing payments service providers such as Coinbase, BitPay and Mollie, designed to ease the on-ramp to acceptance of the digital currency.

Keeping Costs And Risks Low

Intuit Labs argues that checks, cash and credit cards have a number of inherent deficiencies that can be addressed by digital currencies: cash is hard to keep track of, checks have a lot of transaction friction, and credit card fees are high.

“We came up with an innovative way to enable small businesses to accept bitcoin payments without any risk or a bitcoin wallet,” Inuit Labs claims.

The developers identified two major barriers to bitcoin adoption by small businesses.

Firstly, businesses need a bitcoin wallet and trust in third-party wallets is not currently very high. On top of that, they cannot afford to deal with price volatility. With QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments, however, merchants will only see dollars in their account when they accept bitcoins.

Extensive User Base

What sets Intuit apart from some competing bitcoin payments services is its background, since it specialises in accounting software and point-of-sale (POS) software solutions.

POS units powered by Intuit software are common in the US and some other countries, while lot of small businesses in the US already use QuickBooks. This means the company already has an extensive user base, so it will essentially be offering its new bitcoin service to existing users and does not have to start from scratch like BitPay or Coinbase.

Last week Dutch payments provider Mollie entered the bitcoin payments space, with more than 10,000 clients in tow. Intuit is taking a similar approach, albeit potentially on a much bigger scale, since Mollie is limited to the Benelux region.

The service is still being tested, however, and it is unclear when QuickBooks will actually launch.

The Team:

The Innovative team bringing QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments to life identified key problems and solutions:

There are two major barriers that prevent typical small businesses from taking bitcoin payments:

1) They need a bitcoin wallet. With recent news about Mt. Gox in the media, trusting a third party bitcoin wallet provider can be scary.

2) They don’t want to deal with price volatility. When it comes to their revenue, small businesses just want to deal with dollars.

Enter QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments, a bitcoin service that enables small businesses to take bitcoin payments without ever having a bitcoin wallet or ever seeing any bitcoins.

With QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments, you:

* Only see dollars when you accept bitcoin payments.
* Pay less on all bitcoin transactions. Compare that to 1.75% to 2.75% + fees on card transactions.
* Never worry about chargebacks from fraudulent buyers. Chargebacks don’t exist in bitcoin.

The innovators in this project are led by Charles Taira, who has worked at Intuit on mobile payments and payment platforms for the last year.   His team is eager to commence beta testing and the Bitcoin community is eager to see this experiment play out.

Intuit Continues Making Big Moves

Intuit most recently made headlines with the 17th largest acquisition of their corporate career.  As reported by TechCrunch two weeks ago, Intuit bought Lettuce, a platform that allowed companies to manage both the inventory and ordering aspects of their businesses online.  Intuit’s takeover of Lettuce, which cost Intuit a reported $30 million USD, represents a giant step towards ultimate consolidation of the business software industry.  Small businesses around the world need to balance their tight time schedules between regulatory compliance and actual business matters.  The former costs small businesses an arm and a leg while the latter is the only thing that brings in revenue.

While Intuit is not giving much away right now, the company is currently looking for beta testers. Interested parties can sign up on the beta waiting list here.
